Toddler Mom Survival Kit – Car & Bag Edition

Over time, I’ve perfected my system so I can run most errands with just a small fanny pack instead of lugging around a huge diaper bag. The trick? Keeping a fully stocked “base camp” in my car.

When we’re out for a longer adventure, I grab my backpack. For quick errands, the fanny pack wins every time. Whenever I use something from the car kit, I immediately email or set a reminder for myself to restock—future me is very grateful.

CAR KIT ESSENTIALS

Caddy: This one keeps everything neat and easy to grab, but is small enough to be contained at just my daughter’s feet so passengers have ample leg room.

  • Diapers (regular)
  • Swim diapers (if seasonally relevant)
  • Wipes
  • Change of clothes (swap seasonally)
  • Wet bag: My favorite for containing messes.
  • Disposable bags: Scented ones are a lifesaver for stinky diapers.
  • Shelf-stable snacks (for serious snack-mergencies only):
    • Dry cereal
    • Applesauce pouches
    • Freeze-dried fruit
    • Peanut butter crackers
Tip: Even “shelf-stable” snacks go bad faster in a hot car—rotate every few weeks.
  • Umbrella
  • First aid kit
  • Small microfiber towel: This one dries quickly and takes up almost no space.
  • Stroller: Compact, but feature-packed with a long sunshade, multiple seat positions, generous basket, and zip pouch for quick access to my essentials.
  • Carrier (when she was younger):

Seasonal Add-Ons

  • Summer:
    • Stroller fan
    • Cooling towels: Even with warm water, they turn cool after wringing and shaking. These saved us in Kyoto during peak summer heat (poor planning, great towels).
    • Balls or other toys for the park
  • Winter:
    • Extra jacket
    • Thick blanket

FANNY PACK

I keep it light but functional:

  • XL Lululemon fanny pack: Everywhere Belt Bag Large – fits wallet, keys, a Ziploc of wipes, two diapers, and my phone. The warm ash gray would be so versatile.
  • Amazon dupe: This one looks almost identical, comes in tons of colors, and costs way less.

BACKPACK

When we’re going out on longer outings, I love this packable backpack to avoid extra weight. It has lots of different compartments to stay organized.

  • Sunscreen
    • Kids’ sunscreen
    • My sunscreen
    • Powder sunscreen for scalp (this one prevents “hair elastic apocalypse”—yes, that happened when I used regular sunscreen on my daughter’s head)
  • Plenty of diapers + wipes
  • Hats (for both of us)
  • Sunglasses
  • Wet towels (summer) in a Ziploc
  • Handheld fan (summer)
  • Water bottles
  • Lunchbox + ice pack: My daughter loves her Gymbo lunchbox from Gymboree. Letting your toddler pick their own lunchbox makes on-the-go meals way more fun.

Typical Lunchbox Fill:

  • Sandwich
  • Veggie sticks (low mess)
  • Applesauce pouch
  • Cheese sticks
  • Homemade trail mix (craisins, raisins, Cheerios, Goldfish, yogurt drops—aka whatever dry snacks we have)

At the end of the day, every mom’s version of a “survival kit” will look a little different, but having a plan—and a stocked car—has saved me more times than I can count. Whether it’s a surprise diaper blowout, a last-minute park stop, or an unexpected snack crisis, you’ll be ready. Keep it simple, swap things out seasonally, and find what works for your family.

And remember—future you will thank present you for restocking right away.
